If you want a wedding day that’s about nature and doing things your way (with a photographer who doesn’t mind a little lake spray in her boots), an Apostle Islands elopement is a great choice. Up in northern Wisconsin on Lake Superior, Apostle Islands National Lakeshore has rugged cliffs, quiet beaches, and famous sea caves that make you forget you’re still in Wisconsin. This guide is packed with everything you need to plan a memorable, down-to-earth elopement without the stress, the fluff, or the traditions that feel more like habit than intention.

Planning Fundamentals: When + How
Wisconsin’s seasons certainly have character. There’s the warm summer months, the crisp autumn chill and fall colors, and the Wisconsin classic – ice and snow. Being out on one of the larger Great Lakes, you’ll want to be mindful of how the weather can shift and pick a season that best fits your vision.
Summer (June-Aug)
- Pros: Warm temps, calmer waters, most services running.
- Take note: More people, higher lodging and transport prices, a bit buggier.
Shoulder Seasons (late May-early June; September-early October)
- Pros: Fewer crowds, better rates, fall color in early autumn is beautiful.
- Take note: Colder water, services sometimes reduced, weather can be more unpredictable.
Winter / Ice Season
- Pros: Ice caves, snow + frozen lake landscapes – if you like cold and dramatic surroundings
- Take note: Access is a bit trickier, safety element if going out on the ice, many services closed or limited.
How to Get There
- Most islands require a boat, kayak, or water taxi. Madeline Island is the exception for easier land access.
- If eloping in summer, we’ll want to book water transport ASAP; summer weekends fill up fast.
- Keep in mind Lake Superior’s weather can change quickly. Wind, fog, or waves can alter our plans (but don’t worry, I’ll have us covered!).
Location Ideas
Whether it’s for your actual ceremony or any activities we plan, I’ve put together a Google map highlighting all my favorite spots (the yellow markers) for an Apostle Islands elopement. From cliffs and sea caves to quiet beaches and lighthouses, this map makes it easy to see where each location is, get a sense of accessibility, and start picturing how your day could flow.
- Meyers Beach/Sea Caves (Mainland): Dramatic cliffs, sunrise/sunset light, and, in winter, ice caves if safe.
- Sand Island: Lighthouse, sandy shores, and forests; fewer crowds than the mainland.
- Stockton Island (Julian Bay): “Singing sands” beach, dunes, forest trails, and campsites; great for a mix of hiking and water time.
- Devil’s Island & Raspberry Island: Remote, lighthouses, rugged cliffs, and fewer people.
- Oak Island: Quieter and peaceful; ideal for couples wanting privacy.
- Madeline Island: Best for comfort, lodging, and accessibility; good option if anyone in your party prefers easier logistics.
Suggested Activities
- Kayak or paddleboard through sea caves: Guides are available if you don’t have your own gear. Lake spray and dramatic rock formations makes for some really fun photos!
- Hiking and viewpoints: Trails leading to beaches, cliffside overlooks, and forest clearings, giving plenty of options for ceremony or portraits.
- Camping or overnight stays: Sand, Stockton, and Oak Islands all have designated campsites, perfect for couples who’d rather trade hotel walls for pine trees, a campfire, and the sound of the lake.
- Lighthouse tours: A unique way to explore the islands and catch incredible views from the water or the cliffs. See below for a map of the most accessible lighthouses!
Where to Stay for Your Apostle Islands Elopement
In addition to super cute AirBnbs and Vrbos, there are so many inns and B&Bs in the surrounding area. Here are some local favorites:
- Old Rittenhouse Inn: This Victorian mansion in Bayfield is a great semi-formal choice, offering luxury with a cozy Northwoods feel. Each room is uniquely decorated, and the inn provides beautiful lake views. It’s ideal for couples who want a touch of elegance with easy access to the harbor.
- Bayfield Inn: Located on the waterfront, Bayfield Inn offers cozy boutique style rooms, as well as full vacation rental homes if you’re planning on bringing more guests with you. Plus, the inn is only a block from the main ferry that goes to Madeline Island.
- Madeline Island’s The Inn on Madeline Island: If you’d like to stay on one of the Apostle Islands, Madeline Island has a few options, including this charming inn. Staying on the island gives you a head start to exploring and lets you extend the elopement vibes with a night right in the heart of the Apostle Islands area.
What to Pack
The Apostle Islands aren’t the kind of place you show up to with just a suitcase and vibes (kudos for the optimism though). Between the weather, ferry rides, and mix of land and water adventures, a solid plan makes all the difference. When I work with couples, I create a custom packing list based on what we’re doing that day, whether that’s kayaking, hiking, or catching a sunrise ferry. But if you’re just starting to plan, here’s a general list of things to keep in mind:
- Layers (base, mid, shell). Wind + lake + evening cold can sneak up.
- Water-proof/water-resistant gear + dry bags.
- Proper footwear. Wet rocks, sandy beaches, sometimes slippery boardwalks or trails.
- Bug protection (spray, long sleeves) — especially in summer, especially early/late in day.
- Backup outfit or backup plan: things get wet, muddy; weather shifts.
- Plenty of water + snacks. Even short hikes or paddles take more energy than you think!
Best Places to Eat After Your Apostle Islands Elopement
End your day with a romantic dinner just the two of you or have a celebratory meal with your guests! Here are some of my favorite local spots:
- Harbor Table: Located in Washburn, Harbor Table is on the shores of Lake Superior overlooking the Washburn Marina. It’s a local favorite with plenty of room for a large party or a romantic dinner for two.
- Cafe Seiche: If you’re looking for a cozy spot on Madeline Island with a focus on locally caught and farmed food, Cafe Seiche is a great choice. It’s the perfect spot to stop after a day exploring or for a Sunday brunch.
- Landmark Restaurant: Located within Old Rittenhouse Inn, Landmark Restaurant is an iconic stop in Bayfield. For an upscale American and French cuisine, their made-from-scratch menu items never disappoint.
An Apostle Islands elopement isn’t about chasing perfect photos; it’s about creating a day that actually feels like you. Whether that means kayaking to a hidden beach, hiking to a cliff overlook, or catching the ferry at sunrise, I’ll help you plan it so everything runs smoothly and still feels spontaneous. From choosing the right island to building a relaxed timeline, I’ll make sure your day feels personal, unrushed, and completely yours. No cookie-cutter timelines, no fluff, just a damn good time.
